🐶What My Dogs Taught Me About Enjoying the Outdoors

Weekly Check In

Wednesday January 29th

Hey Reader!

If there’s one thing my dogs know how to do, it’s making every walk feel like an adventure. Whether it’s a sunny stroll or a frosty winter hike, they remind me to embrace the little things: the crunch of snow underfoot, the fresh scent of pine, and the thrill of spotting a squirrel (okay, that last one is all them).

Last week, was sooo cold! Subzero temperatures, a good excuse to stay indoors.

But that didn't stop us—bundled up in layers, dogs trotting ahead with tails wagging. They couldn’t care less about the cold; every stick was the best stick ever and every pile of snow smelled better than the last.

Our daily adventures reminded me of a few important life lessons:

  1. Be present. Dogs don’t stress about tomorrow’s to-do list. They’re all about the now—whether it’s sniffing a new trail or greeting a fellow dog walker with tail-wagging enthusiasm.
  2. Move every day. A walk doesn’t have to be perfect or long to make a difference. A little fresh air (even in the cold!) can be a game changer for your mood and energy.
  3. Enjoy the simple things. A walk isn’t just exercise; it’s time to recharge, explore, and soak in some nature—even if it’s just a neighborhood loop.

This week, I challenge you to channel your inner dog: throw on your warmest coat, step outside, and savor whatever adventure awaits—even if it’s just a brisk walk around the block. You might be surprised how much better you feel afterward!

Until next time,

Weekly Check In Wednesday June 4th Hey Reader! Let’s talk about a test that most women in their 40s and 50s aren’t getting—but absolutely should. 👉 It’s called a DEXA scan, and it measures your bone density, muscle mass, and fat distribution—aka your midlife health blueprint. When I worked as a physician assistant in primary care a Dexa scan was only covered for the following patients: Women over 65 Those with a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis Women were postmenopausal and with risk...

Weekly Check In Wednesday May 7th Hey Reader! I am a morning person. I pretty much have always been this way. I love everything about it - coffee, sunrises, fresh air, exercise and of course breakfast. If I had to only eat one meal per day, I would choose breakfast. Hand's down. I am a creature of habit and during the week, my breakfast is pretty much the same. I eat the same thing each morning for several reasons: It tastes great, keeps me full for hours, and requires little effort and...

Weekly Check In Wednesday March 12th Hey Reader! I hope your week is going great! I used to do fasted workouts. It wasn't until I heard a podcast with Dr. Stacy Sims that I learned fasted exercise is not good for women, especially women over 40. Did you know that most of the research done on fasting is done on men? It was a good reminder that just because a research study says something is "good" or "healthy" we need to take a closer look at the study. So, I took her advice and started eating...
